U-RISE Program

Welcome to the Undergraduate Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (U-RISE) Program at CSU San Marcos. The program is funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIH/NIGMS). The U-RISE Program is intended to prepare talented and motivated undergraduate students majoring in the sciences to enter and succeed in doctoral studies (Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.).

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Be a full time student at CSU San Marcos
  2. Have at least 60 units
  3. Commitment to pursuing a Ph.D.
  4. U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  5. Be a science major in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Psychology, Kinesiology or other biomedical related degrees

Program Requirements

  1. Work in a research laboratory 12-15 hours per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week in the summer
  2. Attend Class (Fridays 12:30-2:00) and Workshops/Seminars (Fridays 2:00PM - 3:30PM).
  3. Participate in the CTREE Summer Research Training Program (SRTP)
  4. Participate in the Puentes Program (Graduate School Prep Program)
  5. Attend Scientific meetings to present your research
  6. Participate in all CTREE activities
  7. Mentor Undergraduate CTREE Students

Student Benefits

  1. Annual stipend up to $14,100 per year 
  2. Up to half in-state tuition
  3. Obtain "hands-on" research experience in research laboratories at CSU San Marcos
  4. Travel and conference expenses for one conference per year
  5. Mentoring by program faculty and staff
  6. Networking opportunities
  7. Academic Advising and Priority Registration

Priority Applications and Programs Update

We are accepting applications for the URISE and McNair programs.  Please use the link below to apply to both or either program.  We will be reviewing applications beginning April 1, 2026 and will continue accepting applications until all spots are filled.

For "Letters of Recommendation", please just provide the name and we will reach out to ask for the letter on your behalf.
