The Cesar Chavez statue, located at the top of the staircase near the University Student Union, was unveiled at Cal State San Marcos on March 31, 1997. It was installed to honor Cesar Chavez’s contributions to the farmworker movement and reflected the university’s longstanding commitment to social justice and civil rights.

On March 20, 2026, the statue was removed following reports of abuse involving women and girls. This action was taken to prevent further harm and because the statue’s presence no longer aligned with the university’s vision, mission, and values.

This page will provide ongoing updates as Cal State San Marcos convenes a representative campus advisory group to help guide the future of this space. The process will center community input and ensure that decisions reflect our shared values.
