FAQs about Medication Abortion

  • Is the process safe?

Medication abortion is a safe and effective option for many people up to 11 weeks gestation, however at SHCS, we provide this service only up to 9 weeks gestation. Your provider will review your medical history to ensure it is appropriate for you.

  • How long does the process take?
Most of the cramping and bleeding happens within a few hours after taking the second medication. The full process, including ´Ú´Ç±ô±ô´Ç·É‑u±è testing, takes about one -two weeks. Some people may experience bleeding up to four weeks.
  • Does it hurt?
Most people experience strong cramping, similar to intense menstrual cramps. SHCS will provide medications to help manage pain.
  • How much bleeding should I expect?

Bleeding is usually heavier than a normal period, especially in the first few hours after taking the second medication. Your provider will explain what is normal and when to contact SHCS.

  • Can I use tampons or menstrual cups?
Tampons and menstrual cups are not recommended during this process. Providers recommend using maxi pads during the process so you can monitor bleeding. Your SHCS provider will give you specific guidance.
  • Will I need to miss school or work?

Cramping and bleeding typically occur after taking the second medication at home. Many people prefer to rest during this time. Your provider can help you plan for what to expect.

  • When can I return to normal activities?

Most people resume normal activities within 1–2 days. You may prefer to rest during the heaviest cramping and bleeding.

  • Can I talk to someone if I have questions or concerns during the process?

Yes. SHCS staff are available to support you throughout the process. You’ll receive instructions on when and how to contact a provider if you need help.

  • Do I need to avoid anything during the process?

    Your provider may recommend avoiding:

    • Heavy exercise
    • Sexual intercourse
    • Swimming or hot tubs
    • Soaking in a bath tub
    • Using tampons or menstrual cups

These recommendations help reduce infection risk and allow your body to recover.

  • Will this affect my ability to get pregnant in the future?

Medication abortion does not affect future fertility. You can become pregnant again soon after, so your provider can discuss birth control options if you’re interested.

  • Is my information confidential?

Yes. SHCS follows strict HIPAA privacy laws. Your visit and medical information are confidential.

  • What if the medication abortion is NOT successful?
If the ´Ú´Ç±ô±ô´Ç·É‑u±è test shows the pregnancy has not ended, you will be referred to another medical provider outside of SHCS, wich will NOT BE COVERED by your student health fees. This may be an out of pocket expense or you will need to work with your medical insurance company. SHCS will support you through the process.
  • What if I’m unsure about my decision?
Your provider can talk with you about your options in a non‑judgmental, supportive way. You are never pressured to choose one option over another.
