Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen, in this Patrick Marber translation, follows Hedda, a newlywed woman
to Jorgen Tesman. A passionate academic but not very entertaining as a partner. Hedda
finds herself stuck in her newfound life with Tesman and seeks solace in the seemingly
free lives of Thea Elvsted and her old friend, Eilert Lovborg. Hedda's need to escape
through influencing her old relationships leads to terrible consequences and deepens
her sense of entrapment. Not only in the hands of her husband, but also of the ever-so
charming Judge Brack. Hedda, in an attempt to find agency and regain control, reminds
us of the danger and our complicity in forcing human beings into conformity.
